Our engineers were on-site this month at our Ashburn, Virginia data center, completing infrastructure upgrades that increase capacity and modernize the facility for our US East VPS hosting customers.
Hypervisor RAM expansion
We added terabytes of new RAM capacity across our Ashburn hypervisor fleet. More memory per host means less resource contention, headroom for larger VM configurations, and better performance under peak load.
All hypervisors run our KVM virtualization stack, so every Linux and Windows VPS continues to get dedicated CPU and RAM allocations with full hardware-assisted virtualization.
New Ceph storage clusters
Alongside the hypervisor work, we deployed new Ceph clusters. Ceph is our distributed storage backend: your VPS data is replicated across multiple physical nodes for durability and availability. The new clusters bring:
- More total storage capacity to keep pace with growing demand
- Improved IOPS headroom with the workload spread across more nodes
- Better replication throughput via dedicated network links between nodes
The clusters were brought online gradually while existing workloads continued running. Ceph handles rebalancing in the background, so customers experienced zero downtime during the rollout.
What this means for Ashburn VPS customers
If your VPS runs in our Ashburn facility, you benefit from:
- More available capacity when you scale up or deploy additional instances
- Improved storage performance from the new Ceph clusters
- Stronger baseline performance from the additional hypervisor RAM
Ashburn sits in Virginia’s “Data Center Alley,” home to over 100 data centers and some of the densest Internet connectivity in the world. These upgrades keep our Ashburn facility on a par with the Dallas upgrades and Amsterdam upgrades completed earlier this year.
Ongoing investment
We rotate through our six locations worldwide to refresh hardware, add capacity, and keep our Ceph storage and hypervisor fleet current so capacity grows ahead of demand.
